What to carry with you or pack in carry-on luggage

• Passport / Visas
• Driver's License – check whether an International Driver’s license is required
• Insurance documents – travel, health and motor insurance
• Credit cards, cash cards, travellers cheques
• Currency in home, destination and stop-over denominations
• Air, Sea, Train tickets
• Itinerary with confirmation numbers and addresses and phone numbers of where you'll be staying
• Any valuables, perishable or fragile items. Avoid these items if possible, but if not they will be safer in your carry-on bag.
• A change of clothing and a small wash kit in case luggage is lost.
• Films – new high intensity screening machines can damage film.
• Sentimental items you would hate to lose if luggage is lost.

Care of clothing

• Don't over pack bags.
• Take clothing that is less likely to wrinkle.
• Roll up T-shirts, sweaters or underwear.
• Wrap items that need protecting from wrinkles around the rolled items. This helps prevent creases.
• Pack pressed items (suits, eveningwear, etc) separately in plastic bags, it helps prevent wrinkles.
• Unpack as soon as possible.
• Hang wrinkled items in the bathroom when bathing/showering to help steam out the wrinkles.

Saving weight and space

• Pack in advance to prevent last minute panic when you pack far too much – “just in case”.
• Use space reduction packing bags that take the air out of bulky items.
• Take clothes that work in many weathers (lightweight cloths, silk).
• Take clothes that are versatile and easily washable.
• Use hotel laundry services or launderettes if available and wash items rather than take more items.
• Once packed ask yourself whether you really need everything. Be firm with yourself – “why do I need this?”
• Coordinate your outfits around complimentary colours that can be combined into several outfits.
• Take items appropriate to your destination, the type of holiday and what you will be doing.
• Take items you can layer instead of single heavy items.
• Take small sizes of toiletries that will last just long enough instead of huge bottles.
• Pack small items (underwear, socks, etc) inside shoes.
• Wear/take bulky items (coats/sweaters) on the plane. They can also be used as pillows/covers.

Carrying medication

• Take it in carry-on bags - it is less likely to be lost than checked luggage. A carry-on will do less harm to temperature-sensitive medication.
• Carry medication in original bottles to help avoid security questions.
• Take the generic names of medication since brand names can vary.
• If in doubt about the countries you are visiting take a letter from your doctor stating you need to use the medication.
• Check to see what you can take into the countries you are visiting. You may be faced with having your medication confiscated and/or having to answer to the police.

Other useful tips

• Take dustbin bags to keep your dirty items separate from your other clothes.
• Pack shoes in plastic bags to prevent soiling of other items. Wear the heaviest pair on the journey.
• Swap a change of clothing with a travelling companion in case luggage is lost.
• If travelling involves short stopovers pack you next set of clothing at the top of your luggage for easy access.
• Use plastic bottles to pack liquids. Don’t fill the bottles fully in case they are crushed.
• If you have to carry valuables in your luggage, hide them where they cannot be seen easily.
