What to carry with you or pack in carry-on luggage
Passport / Visas
Driver's License check whether an International Drivers license is required
Insurance documents travel, health and motor insurance
Credit cards, cash cards, travellers cheques
Currency in home, destination and stop-over denominations
Air, Sea, Train tickets
Itinerary with confirmation numbers and addresses and phone numbers of where you'll be staying
Any valuables, perishable or fragile items. Avoid these items if possible, but if not they will be safer in your carry-on bag.
A change of clothing and a small wash kit in case luggage is lost.
Films new high intensity screening machines can damage film.
Sentimental items you would hate to lose if luggage is lost.
Care of clothing
Don't over pack bags.
Take clothing that is less likely to wrinkle.
Roll up T-shirts, sweaters or underwear.
Wrap items that need protecting from wrinkles around the rolled items. This helps prevent creases.
Pack pressed items (suits, eveningwear, etc) separately in plastic bags, it helps prevent wrinkles.
Unpack as soon as possible.
Hang wrinkled items in the bathroom when bathing/showering to help steam out the wrinkles.
Saving weight and space
Pack in advance to prevent last minute panic when you pack far too much just in case.
Use space reduction packing bags that take the air out of bulky items.
Take clothes that work in many weathers (lightweight cloths, silk).
Take clothes that are versatile and easily washable.
Use hotel laundry services or launderettes if available and wash items rather than take more items.
Once packed ask yourself whether you really need everything. Be firm with yourself why do I need this?
Coordinate your outfits around complimentary colours that can be combined into several outfits.
Take items appropriate to your destination, the type of holiday and what you will be doing.
Take items you can layer instead of single heavy items.
Take small sizes of toiletries that will last just long enough instead of huge bottles.
Pack small items (underwear, socks, etc) inside shoes.
Wear/take bulky items (coats/sweaters) on the plane. They can also be used as pillows/covers.
Carrying medication
Take it in carry-on bags - it is less likely to be lost than checked luggage. A carry-on will do less harm to temperature-sensitive medication.
Carry medication in original bottles to help avoid security questions.
Take the generic names of medication since brand names can vary.
If in doubt about the countries you are visiting take a letter from your doctor stating you need to use the medication.
Check to see what you can take into the countries you are visiting. You may be faced with having your medication confiscated and/or having to answer to the police.
Other useful tips
Take dustbin bags to keep your dirty items separate from your other clothes.
Pack shoes in plastic bags to prevent soiling of other items. Wear the heaviest pair on the journey.
Swap a change of clothing with a travelling companion in case luggage is lost.
If travelling involves short stopovers pack you next set of clothing at the top of your luggage for easy access.
Use plastic bottles to pack liquids. Dont fill the bottles fully in case they are crushed.
If you have to carry valuables in your luggage, hide them where they cannot be seen easily.
